Apart from the truly famous Cologne Cathedral, you actually have to factor both “Kölsch” beer as well as “Kölnisch Wasser” (Eau de Cologne) into the prestigious World Heritage designation. After all, both are must-see attractions here in Cologne: If you happen to be at one of their famous Brauhaus beer pubs and you find you are not really that much into beer (well done for thinking, Dad 😉 ) just take this as a tip: Do not let the waiter know. They will just laugh at you and serve you Kölsch anyway. Well done Dad! Of course, we had to finish the beer anyway … hehe.
But water has also been used for quite a different purpose other than brewing beer here throughout the course of history. When visiting Cologne, do not miss a visit to the famous aroma museum “Farina”. It is here where the one & only Eau de Cologne comes from. Standing in front of world-famous Cologne Cathedral: More than 600 years of building and almost 160 metres high, it was the largest building in the world at the time of its final completion. Too high even today for my wide angle lens photo shoot!
Cologne Cathedral is just as impressive from the inside: The roof, “only” 42 metres from the ground appears to soar heavenwards (very successful Gothic style) and continues to amaze visitors …
… deserving to be ranked among the “Top 50 Places To See Before You Die” according to the international Lonely Planet travel guide.
Even modern pieces of decorative glass are used in some of the windows inside the Dome – an interesting and unusual combination for this historical building!
At the heart of Cologne Cathedral is this golden shrine said to contain relics of the Three Magi … a piece of art that surpasses all sense of monetary value. Just priceless (and well under cover by bullet-proof glass 😉 ).
After all the excitement of watching Cologne Cathedral inside out, one is best headed to enjoy an ice cream in a nearby parlour overlooking the Cathedral.
Only three steps away is the local aromatic museum “Farina”, home of the famous Eau de Cologne and clearly worth the visit.
Here, I am happy to shop for friends & family as well as myself. The timeless aroma Eau de Cologne suits both men and women!
